Sandusky Bay Pancake House Succeeds with Peerless Ovens
In early 2020, when the pandemic and subsequent shutdowns were first beginning to impact the economy, businesses across the country needed to find ways to adapt and evolve to stay afloat. 2nd generation restaurant owner Steven Schuster, whose family has been in business in Sandusky, Ohio for 55 years, realized that the moment had arrived to make drastic changes, and so he made a bold move and embarked on an ambitious rebrand to create what is now known as the Sandusky Bay Pancake House.
Due to Schuster’s vision and readiness to act, Sandusky Bay Pancake House has not only survived but thrived during the past two years, and he credits some of that success to his “Eat, Drink, Think …Local” philosophy, wherein he tries to source as many of his products from local sources as possible. “Our mindset is that if a customer is coming to eat at our restaurant and support us, they’re actually supporting all of these other local vendors that we work with, too.”
In fact, the restaurant had so much success that the time to buy a more durable and dependable oven soon arrived. Knowing that Peerless Ovens was a Sandusky company, and keeping in line with his mission statement, Steve began investigating if there was an oven model made locally that would be a fit for his business. Oftentimes, restaurant and/or bakery owners believe that they need a traditional convection oven to get an evenly baked product, but this is not always the case.
Since Sandusky Bay Pancake House is known to produce some of the tastiest baked goods in the Sandusky area, Mr. Schuster was very deliberate in selecting an oven and making sure that the quality of his product would not be negatively affected. “We actually went to Peerless first and tested the oven,” Schuster explained. “We went out a couple times, brought our product there, and tested it in the 2348B to make sure it would cook properly because every oven is a little different.” The verdict? “Sure enough, it’s a first-class oven,” Schuster said. “It’s made right here in town and we’re happy to have (Peerless) as one of our local partners.”
With the help of their new Peerless 2348B bake oven, Sandusky Bay Pancake House is now producing some of their best baked goods yet. They also use the oven as part of their bacon finishing process, demonstrating that the versatility of the oven is only limited by the imagination. “We bake muffins, cookies, biscuits, and cinnamon rolls,” Schuster said, “and our bacon is a two-step process, so we finish our bacon in the oven too, meaning our (2348B) goes all day long.”
Mr. Schuster praised his oven, saying that “Peerless Ovens honestly are some of the best ovens in the world.” But when it comes down to it, Schuster believes he made the right decision in choosing Peerless, not just for the quality, but for the service. “One of my core philosophies is that I want to be able to have the service that (Peerless) can provide, whether that be parts or anything else moving forward, or just coming in to test the product. I couldn’t have done that with some of these other companies,” he stated. “That’s important to me – to be treated like the big customer even though I’m the small guy.”
Peerless Ovens has been in business for over 100 years and has been making its products in the Sandusky area for 90 of those years.
